WHAT A SHOWER

26-May 09:34, by Ketts

Yesterday was an absolutely awful day weather-wise up here in the Bumpkin Shires. Time to settle down and let Sky entertain us, and they done us proud.

The cricket was terrific. 17 wickets and England went from staring certain defeat in the face to having a realistic chance of snatching victory. David Beckham scoring a goal from fully 70 yards. I know, I know it's only the MSL but 70 yards is 70 yards and his technique was exquisite. And of course the League 1 Play-Off Final.

One of the great things about the Championship is you get 6 new opponents every season. We have lost Colchester, Scunthorpe, Leicester, West Brom, Stoke and finally Hull. Replacing them are Derby, Birmingham, Reading, Forest, Swansea and Leeds or Doncaster Rovers.

The morning papers say that Leeds have gone from footballing pariahs to having the public sympathy vote because of their 15 point deduction. Not with me they haven't. Gary McAllister is a great guy but the club and their obnoxious chairman I would not give the time of day to. Besides we want to add the Keepmoat to Swansea's Liberty Stadium as new venues to visit. Strong favourites and with backing from 10, 000 more fans than their opponents Leeds were most pundits' tip. Time for the romance of the game to take over and Donny were deserving 1-0 victors.

21 December 1957 is a date forever etched in the memory of all Addicks fans. Arguably the greatest game of all time, 10 man Charlton came from 5-1 down, with 20 minutes to play, to win 7-6 against Huddersfield Town. It was certainly the greatest game a 10 year-old boy was to see. Just 4 days later, after opening his Christmas presents, the football mad kid was off to the Valley again to witness the traditonal Christmas morning fixture. It made his Christmas that his heroes won 2-0. He was even happier on Boxing Day when they won the return fixture 2-1...

So Doncaster return to Tier 2 for the first time in 50 years where 8 of the opponents they faced all those years ago are still kicking around. Charlton are one of them but one thing is certain; despite the many coincidences this game throws up they can not possibly visit the Valley on the same day they did last time. You see, Doncaster were the last side we faced at the Valley on Christmas Day. Times have changed and the game has moved on. Playing on Christmas Day is now unthinkable. Wonder what happened to that 10 year-old boy, did his love affair with the game last, will he be around to see Doncaster at the Valley next season? What do you think?
