VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE

06-Nov 06:20, by Ketts

Between Sunday and next Saturday The Addicks will play three games in three different competitions, with two of them being televised live.

The life of a football can not get much more varied than that can it? A visit to Northwich in the FA Cup, followed by the trip to St Mary's for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy match and then the vital clash with MK Dons at The Valley.

Both Northwich and MK Dons have injury worries, while both Charlton and the Saints will field weakened teams on Wednesday. Plenty of opportunities then for the fringe players to impress. How many players will feature in all three games?

The live broadcast of the Northwich and Southampton matches does at least ensure far more fans than usual will see the away games, giving them the chance to see some players they may not be familiar with.

By far the most important game is the last one against MK Dons, so the first two will me used as opportunities to try things out and rest players who are carrying knocks.

Deon Burton is unlikely to feature in either of the away games and the two week gap between league games seemed an ideal opportunity to get his troublesome groin operated on.

Christian Dailly has played in every game bar the Carling Cup match at Hereford. Parkinson is mindful of Manuel Llera being one booking away from a ban but Sunday might be a good time to play him. A booking would see him banned for the JPT encounter.

Randolph will finally see first team action for the first time since January on Sunday. Wolves will not allow Carl Ikeme to play but he is available for St Mary's.

Matt Spring will feature in the first two games as will Grant Basey and Jonjo Shelvey, who may well play in all three. Some of the promising youngsters, such as Yado Mambo, will be on the bench. Tamer Tuna will be hoping for a starting berth in at least one of the fixtures.

The rules of the JPT stipulate that six of the eleven most used players must start the game. Elliot and Richardson will definitely not play, nor will Burton. Dailly, Sam and Racon are other contenders for a rest and the manager may still want to be cautious with Jose Semedo.

Parkinson will hope to have Frazer Richardson available for the visit of MK Dons and will probably pick Carl Ikeme ahead of Randolph for the custodian's role. Whoever he plays against Southampton will almost certainly play be retained for the Dons match.

Shelvey may well return to the league side at the expense of McLeod , though the latter will be itching to play against his old club.

What a week. A non-league ground, albeit a fairly new one, a visit to the splendid St Mary's before returning to The Valley for that mouth watering second v third clash. English lower level football at its best.
