ONLY THE LOANLY

26-Nov 10:42, by Ketts

Today sees the closing of the 'emergency' loan window until January. Will there be any frantic last minute activity at The Valley?

It is unlikely that there will be any new arrivals but decisions will have to be made about the three members of the first-team squad who are on short term deals.

Carl Ikeme's appearance against Bristol Rovers is the last covered by the current arrangement, David Mooney's will expire after the Brighton game with Akpo Sodje's initial, non-recallable spell ending after the Stockport game.

Fresh deals for existing loanees can be negotiated after today's deadline but no new loans can be arranged until January.

Tim Breaker had this to say about the trio:

'Hopefully we can keep Carl all season, but we’ll have to wait and see.

'I don’t know what the latest situation is or whether we can extend it but obviously we’ll have to look at Robbie, who’s getting near to fitness as well.

'We’d love to extend David and Akpo’s loans as they’ve both done well for us but it’s down to their clubs, we don’t really know what’s happening in terms of their(Reading and Sheffield Wednesday) injuries.

'For the first month Akpo cannot be recalled but if it goes into a second month they can recall him quickly, and with the deadline coming up on Thursday this could be a vital time for a lot of teams in terms of their squad.

'We’ve got most of our bodies back though we’ve got one or two niggles that hopefully will be back and we’ll have a fit squad for that period.'

Darren Randolph seems to be completely out of the picture and will leave in January. Ikeme is presumably viewed as the number two to Rob Elliot. If so would either he or Wolves find that situation acceptable?

Reading between the lines, it appears both Mooney, and particuarly Sodje, would relish a permanent future in SE7. Both have played - and scored - at a higher level, so would be sensible acquisitions with promotion in mind.

Clarification of the situation surrounding all three should be announced shortly.
